Looking for an Artist

Denizens was originally set up to be a graphic novel series.  I could not find an artist dedicated to a long project so I turned to changing it into a normal novel.

It just doesn't feel right, so i'm going back on the hunt for an artist.

I have money to pay, do you have the time and talent to commit?

Experimentation

Re-writing the beginning a bit to see if it grabs some more attention.  The update will come next week, however the basic change is Eric awaking to The Seven in his room on the first page.  The beginning is the hardest part.

In the meantime, you can read Chapter 1 and 2 as they currently exist, leave some feedback and help make it better overall.

Structural Evolution

When I first started writing Denizens, it was in comic script form.  Not being able to find a steady artist within my price range I scrapped it and came back to it in novel form.

It started with some events that are currently in Chapter 2, but expanded upon.

Then in novel form it actually started with events that are currently planned for Chapter 3.  Out of everyone I asked to take a read and give opinion, only one responded.  He suggested that there wasn't enough background for the main character to care about him.  I re read everything and agreed with the opinion.

Now comes the problem of not much conflict in giving the character background on the first page worth (as I'm told by the same person).  As it may deter people from reading further.  Seeing as how I have over 200 viewers and no comments so far, I may have to agree with that as well.

Since this is a living novel there is bound to be evolution as part of the process.  If anyone out there is lurking about, please, don't be shy.  I would love to hear your opinions!

Artwork - Eric

Here we have Eric Barlow drawn and colored by the great and talented Tazio Bettin.  It blatantly hints at Eric is going to become much more than a guy with weird dreams who wants to protect his friends.

Should there be character previews?

So, i have an seemingly forever growing cast of characters.  They won't all be crammed into this book, but I have a long story to tell in my world.

I have been struggling with wanting to give a sneak peak with some quick character descriptions, but then i'm afraid it will create too many spoilers.

I do have some artwork being made by an old internet illustrator friend.  One of Eric and another of a character that will appear in Chapter 3.  Soon as he is finished I will post those.  I have seen the initial sketches and they are pretty bad ass.  Just waiting for them to be colored.

So, what do you all think?  What would be good for sneak peaks without becoming too much of a spoiler?

Ramblings

This past weekend everything was put on hold because I needed a life refresher.  For me, that is easy as going to the beach.  There is just something about the ocean that realigns everything for me and kills any stress in my life.  I also learned that a Grouper Ruben sandwich is delicious and I want to see Cthulhu explode a pier.


I'm close to finishing Chapter 2 where Eric gets a glimpse of the supernatural craziness to come in his future.  It should be done by tomorrow evening. Well, as done as a rough draft can be.  I have been thinking of doing some clay sculpts of the characters, but all my craft time is geared towards Dragon*Con making costume props for myself and others so those will have to wait till I get a break from that.

In the meantime, go read Chapter 1, comment let me know if it's a good start or horrible.  Creative criticism is appreciated!

What are Denizens?

Denizens,

The name given to the things that should not exist living amongst us.  They dwell within urban legends, hiding at the corner of our vision, in our grandest dreams and most horrid nightmares.  Some are monstrous abominations, others look just as human as you and I.  They wield various supernatural abilities and are dangerous if provoked.  The thing they have in common though is they are embodiments of different sins, virtues, raw emotions.  We humans are a mix of every trait in the personality spectrum.  This is what the Denizens lack.  This is what defines them.  They are incomplete lost beings existing hidden within our world.

Getting started

Hello all,

Sept from OtherRealm Studios here.  I am currently working on an urban fantasy / horror / slight comedy weirdness novel.  Working title is Denizens.  It was originally going to be a series of graphic novels, but I have not found an artist willing to dedicate themselves to a long project within my limited budget.  So, I have reorganized the idea and have started on a novel.

In this blog I will be posting rough drafts of chapters as well as concept sketches, sculpts, props and whatnot.

This will be a living novel.  Meaning as it is being created you all get to see it and comment.  I hope for creative criticism to make it better for the readers.

The rough draft of the first chapter will be posted later today.   I am still setting up the blog and whatnot, so stay tuned for a summary description and possible odd ramblings until then.
